The Junior Combination Room (JCR) existed as a common room for under-graduates and post-graduates, separated from the Senior Combination Room (SCR) which was exclusively for senior members. It was also an organisation under the control, by the early twentieth century, by the oligarchical 'Gargoyles' who were eventually superseded by a more democratic representation of the JCR .In 1972 the JCR Open Meeting voted for the organisation to become the Gonville and Caius Student Union (GCSU), whose function also superseded that of the Amalgamated Clubs.
