The site on Queen's Road is part of one of the College's ancient estates, the demesne of Mortimer's Manor, Newnham, which was given to the College by Anne Scroope in 1498 and enclosed in 1803. After enclosure, plots of land were let on building leases from 1820 onwards, which resulted in the building of a number of private villas, including Finella. The interior was redesigned in an expressionist style in 1927-9 by Raymond Mcgrath for the then tenant, Mansfield Duval Forbes (1889-1936). The property was brought back into College hands after the second World War, and was adapted for use as student and Fellows' accommodation. The surviving plans reflect the alterations made to the house from the 1920s onwards.
