In amongst the chest containing correspondence was a note from Lord McNair, in 1953, to his daughter Oona. This reads: 'This box contains, amongst other things, a number of old letters from me to my mother (who kept nearly all), from her and my father to me etc. Most of them are very trivial and of purely temporary importance, and it may seem silly to keep them. Nevertheless, I find myself [like] any person with a sense of history [that] old letters are of much value in showing how our forbears lived. They are what lawyers call the 'best evidence'. So you may think they are worth keeping for any of my grandchildren to look at..'
