        History

Lord McNair was Vice-Chancellor of Liverpool University from 1938 to 1945. On his appointment Lord McNair said: 'I do not want to be regarded as a professional administrator. I would rather be looked upon as a teacher and student who has temporarily left those paths in order to try to smooth the way for fellow-teachers and fellow-students. I sincerely hope I shall never forget that administration is a secondary function. It is merely a means to an end - merely the handmaiden of teaching, learning and investigation; and I am open to every suggestion whereby my terms of administration can be made so effective as to serve that end.'
