Biographical history
The Shadwell Society was named after Thomas Shadwell who was admitted to Caius in 1656; and went on to become the Poet Laureate. The Society was founded in approximately 1942. The original society was the personal creation of E.K. Bennett, Fellow of Caius. It stated its complete renunciation of Dryden, while it organised the presentation of papers on various literary topics, visited local productions of the works studied, and held social meetings and charades. It has since become a dramatic society.
